Arsenal given boost in Leon Goretzka chase as agent denies Bayern Munich move is done

Race revs up again with the Gunners hoping to sneak in ahead of Barcelona, Juventus, Liverpool and, of course, Bayern

ARSENAL have received a boost in their bid to sign Schalke's Leon Goretzka.

The situation looked lost over the weekend amid reports the German midfielder had agreed to join Bayern Munich.

Now Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has announced that no decision has been made.

With Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid also expressing interest in the 22-year-old, Goretzka's agent has apparently denied the deal has been done.

Heidel said: "Jorg Neubauer has yesterday confirmed to me that there is no decision so far."

But Goretzka  is expected to make an make an announcement on his future in the coming weeks.

And it is assumed that Arsenal will be pushing pretty hard to persuade him to sign on at the Emirates.

Boss Arsene Wenger could lose both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for nothing in the summer when their contracts run out.

If only as an insurance policy, the Frenchman would dearly love to bring Goretzka in this January so he could bed in and fill a big gap should either of those current Arsenal stars decide to call it a day.

It could be he has to wait until the end of the season, but the Emirates' hierarchy will settle for that.

And Arsenal were among the first to interested in signing him when it became apparent his contract was due to run out at the end of the season.

But as Goretzka continued to shine with some impressive performances in the Bundesliga, Liverpool — as well as Manchester United and Barcelona — started to take note.

Schalke have been the surprise package in the Bundesliga this season, sitting in second place.

And Goretzka, who has been compared to Germany legend Michael Ballack in terms of his playing style, has been key to their rise up the table.
