JOSE MOURINHO launched a scathing attack on Manchester United legend Paul Scholes after his side’s New Year’s Day victory at Goodison Park.

Scholes has infuriated Old Trafford manager Mourinho with his repeated attacks on £89million record signing Paul Pogba.

But the Special One said Scholes was fuelled by jealousy after the win at Everton.

He claimed: “It’s not Paul’s fault he made much more money than Paul Scholes. It’s just the way football is.”

Scholes said United looked “dead” and gave their supporters “absolutely nothing” in Saturday’s drab 0—0 home draw with Southampton. He also accused United of looking “tired” and warned they were not certain to finish in the top four.

But, after goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard fired United back up to second, Mourinho hit back: “It didn’t look like the performance of tired boys!

“The only thing Paul Scholes does is criticise.

“I don’t think he comments, he criticises, which is a different thing.

“Scholes will go down in history as a phenomenal player, not as a pundit.

“If one day Paul decides to become a manager I wish he can be 25 per cent as successful as myself.

“Twenty-five per cent of 25 trophies is six, which is phenomenal.”

United had slipped 15 points behind Manchester City and suffered an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to Bristol City.

But Mourinho insisted: “The boys deserved this — the players were fantastic.

“Their pride and effort, everything was top class. We were always in control.”

United played without a recognised striker with Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured and Mourinho was impressed.

He added: “We had to win in a different way so I’m really pleased. Even without points I would be proud.”

Everton boss Sam Allardyce is waiting to see if Besiktas accept a £25million offer for striker Cenk Tosun.

He said: “We’ve done all we can, so I would presume we’ll know in the next 24 hours if it’s been successful.

“We need a bigger goal-scoring threat.

“I can’t guarantee whoever we get will score goals, but I hope he does.”
