'BIG CLUBS DON'T BLAME'

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho blasted by his ex-Real Madrid chief Ramon Calderon

The Red Devils coach has hit out at the fixture list, referees and even his own players over the festive period

EX-REAL MADRID president Ramon Calderon has launched a stinging attack on Jose Mourinho and insists: Big clubs don’t play the blame game.

The Special One has railed against fixtures, referees and his OWN PLAYERS over the festive period.

And Calderon has seen it before at the Bernabeu, where he was president before Mourinho was appointed.

He said: “I learned from Alfredo Di Stefano, a big team can’t ever blame referees, FIFA, UEFA or bad luck That is something very interesting and something you have to do in a big club.

“When Mourinho was here he blamed Unicef, FIFA, kick-off times, the calendar…. everything all the time.

“In my opinion that is a mistake and he doesn’t need that. He is a good coach with personality and it is a pity that he has that defect that he is always trying to blame others.”

Calderon has seen that Mourinho is capable of causing ructions in international squads – just like he did in Spain.

Mourinho’s war with Barcelona split the dressing room with the national team.

And there are fears his rivalry with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City could affect the England team, as Gareth Southgate has key players with both clubs.

Calderon said: “In many times coaches do things that are done on their own, for the purpose of themselves and they don’t think about the relationships of the players.

“You never know and I don’t know if something important happened last week to affect that. I hope not.”

Rivalry will be needed to put aside for the World Cup.

Guardiola’s squad have Kyle Walker, John Stones and Raheem Sterling heading to Russia, with Fabian Delph pushing for a place.

And Mourinho has Phil Jones, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard in Southgate’s plans.

Ex-England skipper Rio Ferdinand has spoken before about cliques in the England squad during his time, with club rivalry remaining on international duty.

In Spain, Mourinho’s intense rivalry led to Real and Barca players at war until Iker Casillas called a truce.

Calderon said: “It was clear the atmosphere between the players was unpleasant in some way and it was clearly because of that incident and they managed to get Iker Casillas to call Xavi.

“It changed everything. Iker Casillas was a true athlete in every sense.

“Casillas got in touch and said ‘we are friends’ so there is no point in being in that situation.

“They decided to be in a different way, not to take into account what Mourinho did.

“It was a very special moment. He phoned Xavi and they accepted it was silly to be fighting, knowing they were team-mates and also players have to behave in a way different to what happened in that match.”
