How Liverpool forced Manchester United to sign Alexis Sanchez, according to Phil Neville

BBC pundit says rampant Anfield club's impressive form has forced Jose Mourinho to move in January

MANCHESTER UNITED were rushed into signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal by Liverpool’s Premier League resurgence, according to Phil Neville.

The former Old Trafford midfielder believes Jose Mourinho sees Jurgen Klopp’s men as a serious threat, which has led to them appearing to pip Manchester City to the Chile star.

Sanchez is set to become the Premier League’s highest paid player when he leaves the Gunners, with United reportedly offering him £505,000 a week.

And Neville told the BBC that Liverpool’s recent form – including their rampant 4-3 win over Manchester City – has forced United’s hand.

Neville said: “I think it’s a sensational deal for Manchester United.

“I would have thought maybe a month ago Alexis Sanchez wouldn’t have come on the radar.

“All of a sudden, every now and again, there comes a signing that you have to make, or if he’s available you have to try and make.

“Sanchez, because of the form of Liverpool in particular, I think it’s maybe hurried up the need for someone to come in and, not secure United’s second place, but actually give them a massive, massive boost.

“I think United will finish in the top four and in second place but the form of Liverpool must be a worry because they’re playing unbelievable at this moment in time.”

Sanchez, 29, has snubbed the Gunners' contract offers with just six months left on his deal, forcing them to flog him for £35million to their bitter rivals.

When Wenger was asked about Sanchez on this morning, he said: "Yes, it is likely to happen.
