That’s a popular thing to say with commentators now: “You can see what it means to him”

Usually they’ll say “You can see what it means to him” when a footballer is pleased about something. If you had a pie chart of all the times they say “You can see what it means to him”, that would easily be the greediest slice.

Occasionally they’ll say “You can see what it means to him” when a footballer is not pleased about something, but that’s a slim slice of this pie chart.

They’re telling us that it means something to him and we can see what it is. They don’t have to tell us what it means to him. We have eyes. We can see. They don’t need to do the looking for us. And they’re not even asking us to use any of our other four senses. It’s right there, as plain as the sponsor on his shirt.
