Manchester United news: Jose Mourinho confesses his sadness over those not playing and his desperation for September

Jose Mourinho had plenty to be satisfied about after his first Premier League match in charge at Old Trafford, as his side eased to a 2-0 victory over Southampton.

Paul Pogba was highly impressive on his debut; Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his goalscoring run; and there were strong showings from the likes of Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and Antonio Valencia.

But the Portuguese coach also allowed himself a moment to commiserate with those left on the sidelines, as a handful of decorated internationals were not even among the substitutes.

"I have so many good players," Mourinho said. "I arrive in the dressing room after the [victory over Southampton] and I was happy but then I become sad, because I arrive there and all the other guys are there in their nice Paul Smith suit but not a tracksuit, not even playing, not even being on the bench.

"I am desperate for September. Because September we have Capital One Cup, we have Europa League... we have seven matches in September and they all play and then I am happy.

"I need September because all these guys need to play, they deserve to play. So Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Jones, Rojo, Romero, Herrera, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Young, Memphis Depay, Marcus Rashford.

"We have a big squad and a top quality squad so I need September urgently."
