To be honest, I never really thought this day would come.

Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester United in Spurs’ last home match of the 2016-17 season. It’s also the last-ever match at White Hart Lane, Spurs’ home of 118 years. There’s a lot of history in this old building, and while Spurs are in the process of building a sparkling new stadium that will be the biggest and best club ground in London, it’s hard not to think that Spurs are also losing something precious.

United are a pretty good team and coached well by Jose Mourinho, but it’s quite possible that they’ll try and phone it in at White Hart Lane. Despite losing the title race to Chelsea yesterday, Spurs will be raring to go today: they are undefeated at the Lane this season and you KNOW they’re going to want to send the old girl off on a high note today. They will field a first-choice team today. United will not, as Mourinho will opt to rotate in order to prioritize their best chance of making the Champions League, which is the Europa League final against Ajax later this month.

This is going to be an emotional match. I wish I were there. Instead, I shall watch from home, with a glass of my finest whisky in my hand (Hakushu 12 year, excellent stuff), and toast to the long and storied history of the Lane.
