World renowned sport doctor Peter Brukner believes Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho should publicly apologise for the ‘appalling’ treatment of his first team doctor Eva Carneiro.

Mourinho has heavily criticised Carneiro for rushing onto the field of play to treat Eden Hazard in the final moments of Chelsea’s 2-2 home draw with Swansea on Saturday, actions that result in her suffering a demotion.

‘I was unhappy with my medical staff. They were impulsive and naive,’ Mourinho said after the game.

‘Whether you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game,’ he added.

It is today reported that Carneiro will lose her place on the Chelsea bench for home games but will keep her post as first team doctor, a move that has widely split opinion in a debate that has seen the Chelsea boss questioned in relation to sexism.

Brukner, who was formerly employed by Liverpool as head of sports medicine and sports science, is now the doctor of the Australian cricket team and told talkSPORT that Mourinho should apologise for his recent actions.

‘I thought it was appalling behaviour by the manager,’ said Brukner

‘The medical staff deserve a public apology, and I’m very disappointed the club hasn’t come out and done something to support them – they were just doing their job.

‘He [Mourinho] has a player who has gone down, has remained down and the referee considered it serious enough to summ

on the doctor and physio. They went on as they must do, and as a result the player had to come off the field.

‘What do you expect the doctor to do, just ignore the referee beckoning them on? So to criticise the medical staff publicly in the way that he did was absolutely appalling behaviour.’
