Arsenal smashed Dinamo Zagreb in their penultimate Champions League group game.

The result means that, no matter what happens in Greece in a fortnight, their European adventures for this season are not quite over.

If they fail to beat Olympiacos by two clear goals and go through to the knockout stage they will instead move into the Europa League.

So what did we learn from the Gunners 3-0 victory on Tuesday night?

1) Heroic failure could come early this season.

For the last few seasons it has felt like Arsenal have made it through the group stages, blew the first leg of their knock-out tie and then almost pulled off a miracle in the second. The key word there being ‘almost’.

This season, the group is set up to go the very same way with the Gunners knowing that they have to win by two goals in Greece against Olympiacos on the final day.

It’s perfectly set up for a one-goal win and then being dumped into the Europa League.

2) Joel Campbell isn’t as bad as we’ve been led to believe.

I’ve been very harsh on Joel Campbell since he arrived back at Arsenal at the start of last season.

Hardly getting near the side, he has been handed his chance because of injuries yet rarely seems to want to take it.

Against Zagreb at the Emirates on Tuesday night, Campbell was much improved on what we’ve come to expect from him and seemed to show a lot more composure on the ball and willingness to get stuck in.

I don’t know if he can do that every week, but if he can, he could actually turn out to be a very decent squad player for the club. It was his best performance for Arsenal.

3) Fans don’t know how to feel

Now that Arsenal have sealed third place in the group at the very least, fans are a little confused. What do we do if we end up in the Europa League playing on

‘Spursdays’ against teams we can’t even pronounce? It’s a trophy, but it’s also a massive distraction.

In England, we have a habit of being more than a little snobbish about the Europa League, but the competition is forever linked with Tottenham in the minds of Arsenal fans and, let’s face it, we’ve spent so long taking the mickey out of them because of it, that any venture into the Europa is not going to be pleasant.

4) Mesut Ozil is the nuts

Three goals, eight assists and three man of the match performances in his last nine games and it is clear that Mesut is on fire.

Has it anything to do with his new lady love? Whatever it is, let’s hope it lasts.

He’s been doing a lot of this stuff since he first arrived, it’s just that now people are starting to put his chances away more often and it’s being noticed by the media.
