Jose Mourinho has confirmed Nemanja Matic is desperate to complete a move to Manchester United after Chelsea sanctioned his £40million transfer.

The Serbian midfielder is deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge after Antonio Conte brought Frenchman Tiemoue Bakayoko to Stamford Bridge.

Matic helped the Blues win two titles in the space of three years but Roman Abramovich agreed to sell him to rivals United – his move could be announced on Monday.

Following United’s pre-season friendly win over Valerenga in Oslo, Mourinho said of Matic: ‘I’m waiting for news.

‘I know that he wants that very, very much and when a player wants very, very much the chance is bigger.

‘So I think we have a chance but in football until it’s official, I saw so many things happen that I refuse to say more than I am telling you now.’

Leaked images surfaced on Sunday afternoon showing Matic in United’s training kit but Mourinho refused to confirm its legitimacy.

‘I don’t know because I was not there [at United’s Carrington training complex],’ he said.

‘I don’t know. I really don’t know. Number 31 is a free number. It was Schweinsteiger. It’s a free jersey, we have a few free and 31 is one of them.’
