David Luiz pulled off one of the highlights of Sunday’s Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Arsenal with his audacious back-pass to Thibaut Courtois.

But what did Martin Keown make of the samba-style defending?

The audacious moment occurred when Luiz found himself under pressure from Danny Welbeck inside his own six-yard box. But rather than panic, the Brazilian flicked the ball over the Arsenal striker’s head and then nonchalantly headed it back to his goalkeeper.

It was a moment that embodied what the Chelsea defender is about – composed, risky and entertaining.

That’s not quite the way Arsenal legend Keown would have been described, but the former Gunner was impressed with what he saw.

‘I found myself sitting next to Martin Keown with his Gooner glasses on,’ revealed Chelsea legend Pat Nevin in his column for Chelsea’s official website. ‘In actual fact Martin and I get on perfectly well, we were team-mates at Everton for a few years and we were able to have a discussion about the merits of David Luiz, not exactly the same type of centre-back as Martin.

‘He said the Brazilian’s cheeky headed back-pass was impressive and that his passing range was as good as anybody around, but then you don’t need to be a former England defender to be able to spot that.’

Nevin went on to reveal that both he and Keown felt that both teams involved in the 1-1 draw weren’t at their best.

‘Both of us did, however, concede that neither team were exactly firing on all cylinders quite yet. Chelsea had three key starters from last season not available for separate reasons and Arsenal were missing Sanchez and Koscielny, their two best performers generally, along with the long-term absentee Santi Cazorla. So indicators were certainly there, but no definitive answers could be ascertained regarding the rest of the season.’
