Manchester United should not give up hope of signing Gareth Bale this summer according to Ian Wright, despite Jose Mourinho insisting a deal is impossible.

Prior to last night’s Super Cup meeting between the Red Devils and Real Madrid, Mourinho said there was no way Bale would be sold if the Welshman started the match.

He duly started in the 2-1 win for Real Madrid and Mourinho admitted defeat after the game.

‘Clearly the club wants him and the manager wants him and he wants the club,’ the Manchester United manager told BT Sport.

‘So for me, it’s game over before it really started. Now I think everyone knows he is going to stay.’

However former Arsenal striker Wright believes Mourinho is wrong to read so much into Bale starting one match and sees a scenario in which the deal could still happen.

If Real Madrid are serious about signing Kylian Mbappe they will have to raise the funds to sign the Monaco wonderkid and make room in their side. Wright believes Bale is the obvious choice to make way – which would open up the possibility of him moving to Old Trafford.

‘I can’t see how Gareth Bale starting has got anything to do with the deal being off,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘At this stage of Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid career, which we’ve heard he doesn’t want to leave.

‘I believe that he is the one if they are going to sell to get that massive amount of money if the Mbappe thing is going to happen I think they can get that money for Bale. I think he is the one they can do it for.

‘I can’t see why it’s something that still couldn’t happen. I believe it could still happen.’

Manchester United have long held an interest in Bale with the club trying to hijack his switch from Tottenham to Real Madrid back in 2013.
