Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that he enjoyed the opening weekend of the Premier League just as much as everyone else after the new campaign kicked off with a bang.

Arsenal won a seven-goal thriller on Friday night, before Liverpool were held to a 3-3 draw away to Watford, and then champions Chelsea succumbed to a 3-2 loss to Burnley.

And Mourinho had the opportunity to watch several of his title rivals in action prior to Sunday’s match against West Ham, and he liked what he saw – even though Arsenal and City both started with wins.

An unusually cheerful Mourinho told Sky Sports: ‘I’m happy to start! We like to play, we like Premier League, we like the opening match. So let’s enjoy!

‘Honestly, as a spectator and as a fan, I have enjoyed the Friday match, I have also enjoyed some Saturday matches that I had a chance to look.

‘So hopefully today we can keep giving good football and entertaining times for the people who love football in this country.’

United are in action against West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday, though surprisingly summer signing Victor Lindelof was left out of the team to take on the Hammers.

Instead, Mourinho picked a centre-back pairing of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, while Daley Blind was named at left-back ahead of Matteo Darmian.

Writing in the match programme before the game, Mourinho once again reiterated his belief that this United team are the best group of players he has ever worked with.

‘That’s what I love most about this squad: the players always give everything,’ he wrote. ‘It makes me so happy to be manager of this club, working with these guys.

‘As I told them all recently, during my long career, I have never worked with a group I like as much as I like them.

‘Our three new signings – Victor, Romelu and Nemanja – are all very lucky to have joined a group like this, because it is so easy to work with them.’
