Everton star Ross Barkley has picked up another injury just three days after returning to training, throwing his hopes of securing a move to either Chelsea or Tottenham into doubt.

The 23-year-old contract rebel, who is refusing to sign a new deal with the Toffees, has endured a frustrating summer after undergoing a hernia operation and failing, as yet, to secure a move away from Goodison Park.

And now the Daily Mail report that he went down in agony clutching his leg in training on Monday at Finch Farm and had to be helped off the field after hurting his hamstring.

He will undergo a scan to determine the full extent of the injury, but it could hamper his chances of sealing a long-awaited move away, especially with Everton demanding £50 million.

Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United have all been credited with an interest in the midfielder this summer, though none are prepared to meet Everton’s asking price.

It had been assumed that his suitors would try and wait until closer to deadline day and try and snatch Barkley for just £25m, despite Ronald Koeman insisting he would not be let go on the cheap.

He said: ‘We have the experience of what we need to pay for players who came here and had one year of contract.

‘If there is a club thinking we can wait until the last day and we put some money on the table and we get Ross Barkley, sorry, you do not get Ross Barkley.’

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard had recently encouraged the Blues to move for Barkley, with Antonio Conte reportedly keen to add more English, homegrown talent to his squad.

‘I like Ross and he’s got so much talent,’ explained Lampard. ‘While it does look like he’s going to leave now, he does need to go to a club where he can fulfil that talent.

‘It’s all there, but he probably just needs to get a bit more out of himself. He’s at a young age and it seems that he wants to move.

‘If he comes to a team like Chelsea or Tottenham, the players around him will help him improve because he’ll see what it takes to go to the next level.

‘Ross has the potential and he needs to go to the next level, he needs to look at the likes of Hazard and Willian and try and do the things they do. That’s not just have the potential, but to create and score goals regularly.’
