Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has got Gunners fans even more excited after adding another fine goal to his collection with a sensational strike for the Under-23s.

Nelson started the match against Derby County along with several familiar first-team names, with Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs all coming through unscathed.

But it was the 17-year-old Nelson who really stole the show on Monday night, triggering a stunning fight back for the Arsenal youngsters after they had gone two goals behind.

On the hour mark, he pulled one back with a neat finish but it was his second goal that left spectators with their mouths wide open.

Receiving the ball in space and on the turn about 35 yards out from goal, Nelson spun, raced towards the opposition box, stood up his man and then placed an outrageous effort into the top corner. Arsenal then grabbed a third to win 3-2.

Arsenal fans were already eager for Nelson to be given a shot in the first team after his promising displays in pre-season, and his latest effort will have only increased the clamour to see him in an Arsenal shirt properly.

He was used predominantly at right wing-back, but was returned to his preferred role off the front against Derby, a role that Arsene Wenger has earmarked as his best position.

‘He’s a more offensive player, more a guy who can play as one of the three strikers or as an offensive midfielder,’ Wenger told Arsenal Player earlier this summer.

‘What is good for his education is to play in this position as well because we learn how to cope with defensive responsibilities, and that’s a good part of the education of the modern player.

‘As strikers or creative players, you tend to have two kinds of players. Some who are good at running with the ball, and some who are good at running off the ball.

‘He’s more a player who likes the ball to his feet and provokes opponents by passing them.’
