Steven Gerrard would love to bring Nemanja Matic to Anfield, if Liverpool could sign any player from Manchester United.

The Reds legend was deeply impressed with the former Chelsea midfielder’s start to life at Old Trafford and thinks the Serb is exactly what Jurgen Klopp is missing in the centre of the park.

And the 2004/05 Champions League winner admitted he’d take the 28-year-old to Merseyside in a heartbeat.

When asked which Manchester United player he’d like at Liverpool, Gerrard replied: ‘Looking at them at the weekend… Matic. He’s a very good player.

‘We haven’t got a natural, sitting holding midfielder at the moment.

‘Jordan Henderson has done a fantastic job in there at times last season, obviously struggled with injury at times, and we’ve got Emre Can as well but for me they are suited as well to be No. 8s that can get into the box.

‘I think that all those players – [Georginio] Wijnaldum, Henderson and Can – would all benefit from having a real big monster of a central midfielder in there who can break up play and help Liverpool be a bit more secure when they pile so many numbers forward.

‘Obviously I don’t want to create any headlines and stuff, but I am a huge fan of Matic. Looking at this weekend, I think he’s the right piece of the jigsaw that Jose [Mourinho] needs.’

Answering the same question, Steve McManaman opted for David De Gea, adding: ‘I like the goalkeeper.

‘I’m not saying Liverpool necessarily need a new goalkeeper but I think the Manchester United goalkeeper has been the standout player for them over the past couple of years.

‘He’s been highly touted at Real Madrid who are currently the best team in the world so they normally don’t make many mistakes so I think the goalkeeper has had a great couple of seasons.’
