Alexandre Lacazette was left a frustrated figure after he was denied what looked a legitimate equaliser against Stoke City.

Arsenal had dominated a typically feisty encounter with Mark Hughes’ side but trailed to Jese Rodriguez’s debut goal, which arrived just two minutes into the second half.

The Gunners proceeded to miss a catalogue of chances, thwarted by Jack Butland in the Stoke goal and frustrated by their own wasteful finishing.

Lacazette appeared, however, to have earned his side a reprieve with 18 minutes remaining, latching onto Olivier Giroud’s flick and lashing an instant left-footed volley past Butland.

It was another example of the France international’s penalty box prowess, but unfortunately for Arsenal the £52million striker had strayed into a marginally off-side position.

Having seen a legitimate penalty claim denied for a trip on Hector Bellerin in the first half, Arsenal fans were in no mood to praise the linesman’s decision…
