Jose Mourinho was spotted in attendance at the Etihad as Manchester City drew 1-1 with Everton on Monday night.

The Special One was seen in the moments leading up to kick-off and watched on as United’s bitter rivals looked for a second victory in their opening two matches of the Premier League campaign.

But it was Wayne Rooney who opened the scoring in the 35th minute, just weeks after completing a move away from Old Trafford following 13 years with the Red Devils.

United have flown out of the blocks in the league this season, with consecutive 4-0 wins over West Ham and Swansea, and Rooney’s emotional farewell had almost been forgotten by supporters.

Rooney has impressed since rejoining Everton on a free transfer back in July and and scored the only goal of the game on his second league debut for the Toffees in a 1-0 defeat of Stoke last weekend.

A number of fans thought it strange that Mourinho would chose to watch Everton’s trip to the Etihad – especially when Luke Shaw and Ashley Young were making their long-awaited returns for the United’s Under-23 side down the road.
