Arsene Wenger has only himself to blame for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s reported desire to quit Arsenal, according to former Liverpool coach Phil Thompson.

The England midfielder is said to have told Wenger he is intent on seeking a new challenge having rejected a contract offer in the region of £180,000-a-week.

Liverpool and Chelsea are both in contention to sign the 23-year-old former Southampton star and Thompson feels he would be best served by ending his six-year association with Arsenal.

‘This boy has got a lot to offer and I don’t think he’s been valued,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘I think he deserves a lot more. If he’s going to go, whether it’s Liverpool or whether it’s any of the top teams, Chelsea have been talked about, I can see him getting into a lot of those sides.”

‘I would certainly take him (at Liverpool). ‘We play with a three in there (midfield).

‘He could play either side of (Jordan) Henderson or if Henderson doesn’t play, (Emre) Can.

‘He brings drive, he brings energy to any side.’
