Petr Cech says Arsenal are still capable of winning the Premier League title, despite their shocking defeat to Liverpool.

The Gunners were beaten 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday with Liverpool punishing a dreadful performance from the visitors.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring after 17 minutes before Sadio Mane doubled the lead before half-time with a fine curled finish. Mohamed Salah scored a fine counter-attacking goal after the break before turning provider for Daniel Sturridge to head the last goal.

Liverpool capitalised on a total lack of effort from Arsenal which was also littered with individual errors and poor performances.

‘I think it was quite simply unacceptable for the size of the club we are and for the team we have,’ Cech told Sky Sports after the game.

‘You cannot come here and, obviously you can come and lose 4-0 – it can happen on a bad day when you find you are unlucky and your opponent is playing well and scores every shot they have then it can happen. But not like it happened today because I think the way it happened today is unacceptable.

‘We were not fighting, we were not running enough, we were not winning any individual battles and as a team we completely failed to respond to their way of playing and this is the most disappointing. We have only ourselves to blame.’

Despite the terrible performance from Arsenal which leaves them with just three points after three games, Cech believes the Gunners remain capable of lifting the Premier League trophy in May.

‘I would say the only positive thing out of the game is we have to respond and we have time to respond as it is very early doors in the season. With two defeats you can still win the league so it’s not a problem.

‘I think, if I didn’t believe that we can do that [win the title] I would probably retire. I believe this team has everything to complete and to be able to win the title. I believe we show that in many games and we need to make sure we are consistent and when the games come that we are always on top.’
