Chelsea missed out on signing Romelu Lukaku due to Everton’s hefty transfer demand, according to reports in Belgium.

Sport/Foot, via Sport Witness, claims that Everton were asking for €50 million (£46m) and also wanted Michy Batshuayi and Bertrand Traore included in the deal.

Chelsea refused to meet Everton’s asking price and the Belgium international subsequently joined Manchester United for an initial £75m fee.

Batshuayi, who was a £33m signing from Marseille last summer, remains at Chelsea, while Traore was sold to Lyon for £8.8m after spending last season on loan at Ajax.

Chelsea ended up signing Alvaro Morata in a £70m deal from Real Madrid, making him the most expensive Spanish player in history.

The Premier League champions remain in contact with Everton and submitted a £25m bid for Ross Barkley on Tuesday.

Everton have rejected Chelsea’s offer for the midfielder, whose contract expires next summer.
