Virgil van Dijk may fail to get his move to Liverpool or Chelsea with neither club yet making an official bid for the Southampton defender.

The Netherlands international has been one of the most talked about transfer targets of the summer.

Having impressed at St Mary’s over the last couple of seasons numerous clubs expressed interest in signing the 26-year-old. Liverpool have been the club most seriously linked, with the Reds having to issue a public apology earlier in the summer amid fears they could be reported for making an illegal approach for the player. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte also sees the centre-back as an ideal addition to his squad.

Van Dijk has made clear his desire to leave, with Anfield his preferred destination. He has handed in a transfer request and been training alone.

But neither Liverpool or Chelsea have made an official bid, despite just hours of the transfer window remaining.

Van Dijk attended Southampton’s training ground this morning before leaving in the back of a car with blacked out windows. He had his head down and hood up as he left without stopping to talk to waiting reporters.

The news of no bid may come as a surprise to the player who, according to The Independent, was confident of a move happening.
