Liverpool will have to continue repelling Barcelona’s advances for Philippe Coutinho for 24 hours after the window closes due to contrasting transfer deadlines.

The Catalan giants are desperate to land the Brazilian this summer having made him their priority target following the departure of Neymar.

They have made numerous bids, with the latest understood to be in the region of £130million.

Liverpool have so far refused all offers with their stance becoming something of a point of principal.

Liverpool’s statement on Coutinho

‘We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho.

‘The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes.’

That hasn’t put Barcelona off and the Spanish side will be able to continue tempting Liverpool to sell for 24 hours after the transfer window closes.

While the window closes at 11pm tonight (Thursday) for the Premier League and the majority of Europe’s other major leagues, the Spanish transfer window remains open until 11pm (BST) tomorrow (Friday).

The Spanish FA opted to start and open their window a day later than England, Italy and France while it closed six hours earlier in Germany. The decision was made by the Spanish authorities over a year ago.

The likelihood of Liverpool selling Coutinho during that 24 hour period seems remote due to their inability to sign a replacement. However it will be an option.

While frustrating for Liverpool, it could prove helpful for other clubs. Among them will be Chelsea who are looking to offload Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid. With no breakthrough yet made, the extra time could see a deal still go through.
