Thomas Lemar had no other aim than to join Liverpool during the final stages of the summer transfer window, according to reports in France.
Arsenal had a £92 million offer for the 21-year-old accepted by Monaco on Thursday as Arsene Wenger was targeting a replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
But Lemar turned down Arsenal, with L’Equipe claiming that the midfielder ‘only had eyes for Liverpool’.
The report also suggests that Liverpool are likely to make a fresh move for Lemar in the next transfer window.
Liverpool had launched a club-record £70m bid but Monaco were demanding a higher fee due to the competition provided by Arsenal.
After scoring twice in France’s 4-0 win over Netherlands on Thursday evening, Lemar was asked about his decision to reject Arsene Wenger’s side.
‘I am a Monaco player and I am very happy there,’ he told Canal Plus.
‘Now I am going to go and have a good season with my club, try to keep progressing and advancing in my career.’
