Roy Keane was a better player than Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, according to Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

Keane played almost 500 games for United, helping the club win seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League in his 22-year spell at Old Trafford.

And Giggs, who is the most decorated player in football history with 34 trophies, believes back-to-back Premier League winner Kante cannot be compared with his former team-mate Keane.

When asked about Keane’s claim that he would be valued at £2billion in the current market, Giggs told BT Sport: ‘I don’t know about that but I think Roy’s point was that you’re seeing average players going for massive sums.

‘You look back at some of the players that we played with – what would they be worth now?

‘Ruud van Nistelrooy, just an unbelievable goalscorer. What would he be worth now? Where you’re just guaranteed goals every season.

‘So I think that’s the point that Roy was trying to make and he’s right because it’s just ridiculous now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop. It looks like it’s going up.’

Asked how much Republic of Ireland legend Keane would be worth now, Giggs added: ‘You couldn’t buy him because you look around the league, who’s like him?

‘[N’Golo] Kante’s obviously a fantastic player, but Roy’s better than Kante.’

Kante has been a revelation since arriving in England two years ago, becoming the first player to win back-to-back titles with different clubs.

The 26-year-old was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year for his performances at Stamford Bridge last season.
