Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his disbelief at the incredible rise in Ousmane Dembele’s transfer value following his transfer to Barcelona after just a year at Borussia Dortmund.

The France international shone in his single season in the Bundesliga, establishing himself as one of the best young players in Europe before a stunning £135million move to the Nou Camp.

This followed Dortmund signing Dembele from Rennes for just £12m the previous summer, with Wenger remarking that there isn’t a coach in the game who could improve a player that significantly.

The Gunners boss notably made a huge profit on Nicolas Anelka back in 1999, selling the French striker to Real Madrid for £22.3m despite bringing him to Arsenal for only £500,000.

Still, Wenger believes there is a growing problem in the transfer market in terms of player value in connection to the reality of their abilities.

‘The amount of money is completely disconnected to reality and the truth,’ the Frenchman told beIN Sports.

‘I give you one example: no matter how well you work as a football coach – Dembele last year was 15 (million), this year 150 – no matter how well you work on the football pitch, you cannot make a player go from 15 to 150.
