Juan Mata insists Manchester United have the belief to win the Premier League title this season.

Jose Mourinho’s side have made a superb start to the season, recording back-to-back 4-0 thrashings and beating Leicester City comfortably to sit top of the table after three games.

The Red Devils face Stoke City this weekend and Mata, 29, anticipates a difficult game at the Britannia Stadium.

When asked whether there was belief in the squad that a Premier League title challenge awaits, Mata said: ‘The belief is always there.

‘When you play for such a club you start every competition believing that you can win it.

‘Some bad games didn’t allow us to win it last year, but we need to find that consistency that can make us fight in the last months and be one of those teams that will be up there.

‘It’s the second year for the manager, he knows everyone better, we know each other better, so let’s try.

‘We’re really pleased with our start, but it’s only a start. We’ve won three games with confidence and good football.’

The Spain international added: ‘But there’s still a lot to play for. Stoke is going to be tough, but we’re confident and the team is strong, mentally and physically. We’re playing good as a team.

‘It’s about getting a good momentum. We have a good squad, but in football you never know what’s enough and what’s not enough.

‘The players that came can add things to the team and they have already been playing very good.’

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford impressed for England on Monday, scoring the winner at Wembley in the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.

And Mata insists there is more to come from the 19-year-old forward: ‘Since the first moment we saw him in training, we thought he was special.

‘And he’s making it real. He’s scoring for England, for us [Manchester United] and he has been a really good player and a real threat for opposition defenders.

‘I think he can be even bigger. He has a great mentality and great qualities to become a big, big player.’
