Liverpool are reportedly at odds with Emre Can over putting a release clause in his new contract amid transfer links with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Juventus.

The Germany international has been a key player for the Reds and one that Jurgen Klopp won’t want to lose, but they are sweating over his future as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Can was linked as a target for Juventus for much of the summer, and he will be free to negotiate a move to a European club from January onwards.

Surprise reports yesterday also claimed Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Chelsea and United are starting to show an interest in Can, whose contract talks with the Merseyside giants have stalled.

Can, 23, is said to be insisting on a release clause being written into his new deal, which Liverpool are not at all keen on, according to the Daily Star.

The club may well have seen the manner in which Neymar left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain after having his buy-out clause triggered, and won’t want to risk the same thing happening to their best players.

A lack of release clause in Philippe Coutinho’s contract allowed Liverpool to fight off interest in him this summer, and they’ll want to avoid setting a precedent whereby other stars demand the same kind of opportunity to leave if big enough offers come in.

Still, potentially losing Can to a major rival on a free would undoubtedly be the biggest blow, with the former Bayern Munich youngster certainly looking capable of making a big impact at teams like Chelsea or United, who were both in the market for central midfielders this summer.

Can joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and has gone from strength to strength since then, making 132 appearances for the Reds and scoring ten goals.
