Antonio Conte believes Harry Maguire possesses many of the characteristics which helped ensure John Terry enjoyed a long and distinguished international career.

The 24-year-old joined Leicester City from relegated Hull City in the summer in a £17million deal and has immediately established himself as a key component of Craig Shakespeare’s side.

Maguire was rewarded for his early season performances with his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers and Conte has been impressed with what he has seen from the imposing centre-half.

‘Yes I think he has the right characteristics to play for the national team for many years,’ said Conte.

‘To compare him with John is very difficult because John played a lot of games with national team. He was captain, he was legend for the England national football team and Chelsea.

‘But Maguire has the right characteristics to follow this type of career.’

Maguire will be charged with trying to tame Alvaro Morata and a Chelsea attack that could well contain the fit again Eden Hazard when Leicester entertain Chelsea on Saturday but Conte knows the hosts will carry a threat of their own.

He added: ‘Vardy and Mahrez, you must pay great attention to them and don’t forget Maguire.

‘They have great experience with Morgan and Fuchs is the captain of national team. Two seasons ago thy won the league so they are a very good team.’
