Alvaro Morata has asked Chelsea fans to stop singing the antisemitic chant that was heard during Saturday’s win at Leicester.
The Spain international scored in the victory over Leicester City, continuing a fine start for the Blues since his summer transfer from Real Madrid.
Chelsea’s third consecutive win was, however, soured slightly by a chant used by some Chelsea supporters, which contains an antisemitic slur in reference to Premier League rivals Tottenham.
After the match, Chelsea released a statement which read: ‘The club and the players appreciate the fans’ passionate support away from home, of course, but the language in that song is not acceptable at all.
‘Alvaro does not want to be connected with that particular song in any way and both the player and the club request the supporters stop singing it with immediate effect.’
Morata subsequently echoed those sentiments, tweeting: ‘Since I arrived, I have been able to feel your support every single day, you are amazing and I’d like to ask you to please respect everyone!’
Following another fine performance on the pitch, manager Antoino Conte revealed his was delighted with the club-record signing’s overall contribution.
‘It’s a good day for the team and for Alvaro,’ Conte said of Morata. ‘It’s always important for the striker to score but for me, it’s very important for me to see he’s improving and more involved in our idea of football. For me this is the most important thing. Then if he scores I’m very happy, and I’m pleased for the player.’
