David De Gea reached a major personal milestone for Manchester United along with his side’s 3-0 victory over Basel.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who arrived at Old Trafford for a fee of £18.9million from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, has become United’s talisman in recent seasons and the Red Devils have thus far managed to fend off Real Madrid’s advances.

Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford stole the headlines with their goals in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash but De Gea remarkably managed to claim his 100th clean sheet for the club.

Unsurprisingly, De Gea put in another world-class performance for Jose Mourinho’s side to continue his impressive start to the season and, ahead of the match, the Spaniard insisted that he is hell-bent on becoming the best ‘keeper on the planet.

I always want to be the best,’ he said.

‘I train hard to improve every day, in every training [session], so I work really hard to be the best keeper in the world.

I don’t know who is the best at the moment but this is what I want – to be the best.

‘All three keepers at United – Sergio [Romero], Joel [Pereira] and me – train really hard to be the player who is on the pitch to play in the games. Now I feel really strong, really confident.

‘Everyone trains hard to be in the starting XI and that’s it.’
