Rio Ferdinand has told Romelu Lukaku to emulate Chelsea legend Didier Drogba by scoring ‘big goals in big games’ for Manchester United.

Lukaku has made a fine start to his career at Old Trafford following his £70million move from Everton in the summer, scoring six goals in his first six games for the club.

And Ferdinand, who spent over a decade at United as a player, believes the Belgium international will become a hero for his former club if can shine at pivotal times.

‘Didier is a player he [Lukaku] should be looking up to,’ former England defender Ferdinand told BT Sport.

‘He should be looking at certain things from his game to add to his own. And a particular part of it, when we were looking at Lukaku, he obviously scores a lot of goals.

‘You hear Drogba’s goal record and it wouldn’t blow you away in terms of numbers – but he scored important goals, big goals in big games.

‘Cup finals and league deciders, and this is what this guy has got to do, this is where he’ll become loved and become part of the folklore at Manchester United.’

Lukaku’s most recent goal came in United’s Champions League opener against Basel on Tuesday night – Marouane Fellaini and Marcus Rashford were also on target as Jose Mourinho’s side won 3-0.
