Everton manager Ronaldo Koeman fears Romelu Lukaku could enjoy a field day against his former side on the evidence of recent performances.

Lukaku has hit the ground running since his £75million switch to Old Trafford, scoring six goals in all competitions, including one on his Champions League debut against Basel in midweek.

The Toffees, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing start to the new campaign and have suffered back-to-back 3-0 defeats against Tottenham and Atalanta.

Koeman is already under pressure having spent heavily during the close season in a bid to assemble a squad capable of gatecrashing the top four and acknowledged instant improvement is required.

He said: ‘We know him really well. He’s one of the best strikers, like I mentioned last season. He is a great finisher, and I hope we know how to defend him.

‘But there is a lot of quality to the player, and a lot of quality around him. But in the box he is really dangerous, fast and strong.

‘If we defend like we have the last few games, maybe it will be his afternoon.’
