Sunday saw Everton striker Wayne Rooney return to Manchester United for the first time following his summer departure.

Ahead of the Premier League meeting between Everton and his old side, Rooney looked to play down the significance of the occasion, saying it was just another game.

But the warm welcome he received from the Old Trafford faithful as he emerged from the tunnel prior to kick-off ensured this was no ordinary game for Rooney.

Despite trying to keep the focus on the football, Rooney and former team-mate David De Gea were unable to retain their loyalties until the conclusion of the match.

Following the blowing of the half-time whistle, at which point Manchester United were 1-0 up, the two warmly embraced. While short of a half-time shirt swap, some eyebrows may have been raised at the cosy nature of their greeting with 45 minutes of the game still to go.

Despite any concerns, De Gea had his wits about him shortly after the restart when he managed to stop a Rooney shot from close range.

Manchester United were leading thanks to an Antonio Valencia rocket early in the match.
