Jose Mourinho revealed that the decision to let Anthony Martial take Manchester United’s penalty in the side’s 4-0 defeat of Everton was left up to his players.

Martial started on the bench at Old Trafford, despite his strong start for United in the Premier League this season, but replaced Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 88th minute as the Red Devils were 2-0 in front.

Romelu Lukaku immediately put Mourinho’s men 3-0 in front after Martial’s arrival and the France forward scored a goal of his own as United were handed a spot-kick in the 92nd minute.

Mourinho claimed that Juan Mata was his first-choice penalty taker but was happy Martial was able to find the net after the Spaniard left the field.

‘The penalty taker today was Mata and he was out and then at 3-0 I let them take the decision,’ the Portuguese explained.

‘It could have been Romelu to give him confidence but Martial had a good 10 minutes. It was nice for Martial.

‘It was fine for me – no problem.’
