Marcus Rashford and Gabriel Jesus are among seven Premier League youngsters shortlisted for the 2017 Golden Boy award.

They are among a total of 25 players in contention for the prestigious gong, which was created by Italian publication Tuttosport.

Now in its 14th year, the award recognises the most impressive footballers under the age of 21 based on the last calendar year. Around 30 journalists vote for the winner, with representatives from L’Equipe, Bild, Marca and The Times among them.

In addition to Manchester United striker Rashford and Man City star Jesus, there are two Liverpool players on the list – Dominic Solanke and Joe Gomez, Everton’s Dominic Calvin-Lewin, Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker-Peters and West Ham midfielder Reece Oxford, who is currently on loan with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Of the 25 players shortlisted, Kylian Mbappe will be the strong favourite. The Frenchman’s impressive performances for Monaco led to a summer switch to PSG that will eventually see him cost around £160m.

Ousmane Dembele, who moved to Barcelona for £130m, will also be a contender. Meanwhile Gianluigi Donnarumma of AC Milan, who was persistently linked with a transfer over the summer, will also fancy his chances of claiming the prize.

Last year Rashford finished second, with Renato Sanches winning the prize.

Despite the dreadful downturn in form of last year’s winner, previous recipients indicate the Golden Boy award is a good indicator of future success. Among those to have claimed the prize are Lionel Messi, Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Isco, Raheem Sterling, Mario Gotze, Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero, Cesc Fabregas and Wayne Rooney.
