Manchester United fans began thanking Louis van Gaal for bringing Anthony Martial to Old Trafford during the forward’s dazzling performance in a 4-1 defeat of Burton Albion.

Martial started alongside Marcus Rashford for the EFL Cup third round clash and the 21-year-old attacker tore United’s Championship opposition to shreds.

While Van Gaal was a popular character among United fans during his two-year stay at the club, the Dutchman’s drab tactics and poor win ratio ended in his sacking last summer.

As Martial was busy ending the careers of Burton’s defenders on Wednesday night, though, a number of supporters began hailing Van Gaal for bring the Frenchman to the club back in 2015.

Martial’s signing came out of nowhere and many labelled him simply a ‘panic-buy’ – but the France international is starting to prove is early doubters wrong.

The youngster’s consistency has been criticised during his Old Trafford career but there are signs he could about to have a breakthrough season in England.

Martial has already scored four goals for the Red Devils and has been one of Jose Mourinho’s standout players at the beginning of the campaign.
