Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger planning new contracts for Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he is planning to hold talks with Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey over signing new contracts with the club.

The pair have been important members of the Gunners’ first-team so far this season, but both have deals due to expire in the summer of 2019.

Arsenal have suffered a major headache over the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, who have snubbed new contracts and could be free agents at the end of the season, and will want to avoid a repeat with Welbeck and Ramsey.

Wenger has so far been unable to make any progress with Sanchez and Ozil, but insists it is part of his plan to ensure the England striker and Wales midfielder are kept on at the Emirates Stadium.

‘Yes, that is something we want to address,’ he said when asked about the pair.

‘Both of them are in a good moment for us.’

Wenger also re-iterated a view he has expressed before, that with the transfer market in its current state, there will be more players running down their contracts as Sanchez and Ozil are doing.

‘You will have more and more players going into the final year of their contract,’ the Frenchman said.

‘You will be in a position where you either extend for money you cannot afford, or you go into the final year of their contract.

‘This season there were 107 players in the Premier League who got into the final year of their contract for the first time, and you will see that more. The clubs want too much more for normal players. Because they say if one player (Neymar) is worth £200 million, then this player is worth £50 million.

‘But everybody knows £50 million is too much for that player and they cannot afford it. So what happens? The club cannot sell, and doesn’t extend the contract, so more and more players are going into the final year of their contract.’
