Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been criticised by former manager Craig Shakespeare over the manner of his transfer away from Leicester City this summer.

The England international sealed a deadline day move from the King Power Stadium to Stamford Bridge, having handed in a transfer request to the Foxes.

Shakespeare was keen to keep hold of Drinkwater, but admits the whole saga damaged his relationship with the player.

Though he didn’t go into details, the Leicester boss suggested Drinkwater had his head turned by the big money on offer at Chelsea.

‘Sometimes players see the opportunity to move to a bigger club and the financial rewards that might bring,’ Shakespeare told the Daily Telegraph.

‘Danny made it clear he wanted to move and didn’t want to be here. The relationship we’d had up to that point had been very good.’

The 53-year-old added that while he didn’t want to give in and let Drinkwater leave, he ultimately had to listen to the club’s owners when it came to cashing in on the former Manchester United man, who moved for around £35million.

‘I’ll be honest, I wasn’t happy losing one of my best players,’ Shakespeare added.

‘The big disappointment is I didn’t want to sell him for any price and ultimately I have to abide by people above me because they run the club.’
