Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is expecting Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea to be challenging for the Premier League title come the end of the season, with Liverpool completing the top four.

City, United and Chelsea already occupy the top-three spots in the division, with fellow expected challengers Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Arsenal already off the pace.

Both Manchester clubs are unbeaten, with Pep Guardiola’s men edging Jose Mourinho’s outfit based on alphabetical order alone, with each side winning four, drawing once with a goal difference of +14.

Chelsea are just behind them having overcome a poor start to the season against Burnley and the trio’s efforts have further convinced Thompson that they will be the main title challengers.

When asked which teams will be involved in the race for the Premier League trophy, he told Sky Sports’ The Debate: ‘I would think Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.’

He was then questioned on how his former club, Liverpool, would fare, to which he responded: ‘Fourth.’

The Reds have only won two of their opening five league games, and are without a win in September following defeats to Manchester City and Leicester and draws against Sevilla and Burnley.
