Wayne Rooney suffered a nasty eye injury during Everton’s clash with Bournemouth on Saturday.
During the first half of the match at Goodison Park, Simon Francis’ elbow caught the former Manchester United forward in the face.
Blood immediately began pouring from a cut around Rooney’s eye and the 31-year-old required lengthy medical attention from the physio.
After the first half ended goalless, Josh King opened the scoring for Bournemouth in the 49th minute and Everton needed two late goals from substitute Oumar Niasse to secure three points.
Despite the severity of Rooney’s injury, former Premier League referee Graham Poll believes Francis should not have been sent off.
‘It’s not deliberate,’ he told BT Sport.
‘Because if a player wants to do someone with an arm, they tend to clench their fist to give it power.’
