Arsenal legend Martin Keown got rather excited by the performance of 17-year-old winger Reiss Nelson in the Gunners’ Europa League win over BATE Borisov tonight.

The England youth international put in a fine display at wing-back, using any opportunity available to bomb forward and showcase his skills.

Nelson first broke onto the scene in Arsene Wenger’s senior squad during pre-season, when he was again used as a wing-back despite publicly stating he sees himself as an attacking midfielder.

Still, Keown was full of praise for the teenager after he shone in tonight’s 4-2 win in Belarus, comparing some of his flair and skill to Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star Neymar.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, the former Arsenal defender was stunned by the potential Nelson is showing at such a young age.

‘These are the sort of touches you often see or associate with a Neymar or other top player,’ Keown said.

‘He breezes past players. Wenger will know the quality he has, he’s looked after him well.

’17 years of age, it’s quite phenomenal the ability this boy has.’

Keown also praised Olivier Giroud, who reached 100 goals for Arsenal this evening when he scored from the penalty spot in the second half.

The Frenchman hasn’t always been a regular or appreciated by all fans and pundits during his five years in north London, but Keown said he’s played his role well in Wenger’s squad.

‘He does look better coming off the bench, he’s that sort of player, but he’s been a very important player for Arsene Wenger,’ the ex-Gunner added.
