Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry ahead of the January transfer window.

Fry, 20, spent the first half of last season at Rotherham but the centre-back’s contract was terminated in January after making only only ten starts on loan at the New York Stadium.

The youngster, though, has broken into Garry Monk’s first-team at Boro this term and his performances in the Championship have caught the eye of the Premier League’s elite clubs.

According to The Daily Mail, both Chelsea and United are keeping close tabs on Fry as Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho scour the market for defensive reinforcements.

Fry was called up to the England Under-21s for the first time last month and made his debut in a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Chelsea have also been linked with Fry’s centre-back partner at Boro, Ben Gibson, in recent months but the Englishman remained at the Riverside Stadium for the 2017/18 campaign.

The Blues instead opted to sign Antonio Rudiger from Roma for an initial fee of £29million in July.
