Joachim Low provided a worrying injury update on Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi after the Germany international limped off during a 5-1 win over Azerbaijan.

The 25-year-old hobbled off the pitch with assistance from Germany’s coaching staff after just 36 minutes and is now set to miss Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Watford at the weekend.

But Low has warned that Mustafi will likely be taking a ‘longer break’ after appearing to tear a thigh muscle.

‘With Mustafi it seems that it is muscle tear or some muscle fibre tear,’ he said after the match.

‘In any case it could force him to a longer break.’

It appears almost certain that Mustafi will be ruled out of Arsenal’s remaining games in October, with five fixtures coming up in the coming weeks.

Arsenal have three tricky away games against Watford, Crvena Zvezda and Everton, before home matches against Norwich and Swansea.

Should the problem keep the German sidelined in November, he could potentially miss clashes with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, in what would be a real blow to Arsenal’s season.

Mustafi has been in decent form recently, forming a tidy back-three alongside Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal.

The trio have helped Arsenal keep four clean sheets in their past four Premier League games and Arsene Wenger will be pained to mix up what was proving to be an effective defensive formula.
