Jose Mourinho is anxious about Romelu Lukaku’s involvement in Belgium’s meaningless final World Cup qualifier as he prepares for a trip to Anfield this weekend.

The Manchester United boss is sweating on the fitness of his star striker as he was declared fit to play against Cyprus by former Everton boss Roberto Martinez on Monday.

‘Romelu is fit and available, he’s training with us tonight,’ Martinez said.

‘And, no, I have not received a call from Mourinho. The reason he wasn’t in the squad in the previous game was because he wasn’t 100%.

‘Now he is 100% but we need to take into consideration that he has been with the group for only one session.

‘He’s been working on an individual basis, really good work, but we need to keep that in mind.’

There’s nothing on the line in Belgium’s final World Cup qualifier with Martinez’s men already qualified for Russia 2018 and Cyprus having no chance of making the play-offs. As such, Mourinho is keen for Lukaku to sit out the game.

However, he will not interfere with Martinez’s plans after insisting 10 days ago he would not get involved, according to the Daily Mail.

Should Lukaku aggravate his ankle injury problem in the dead rubber ahead of such an important Premier League clash, though, you can be sure Mourinho will have plenty to say about it.
