Jose Mourinho is not convinced Mesut Ozil is the player he needs to take Manchester United to the next level, despite rumours linking the German with a move to Old Trafford.

Reports emerged linking Mourinho with a surprise reunion with a player he managed at Real Madrid, with the Arsenal man out of contract next summer.

He will be available for nothing if he does not sign an extension and can begin talking with clubs abroad come January, though United are believed to have been tracking him in spite of that restriction.

But The Sun claim Mourinho is no longer convinced the ‘lightweight’ star can provide what he needs, and things get even worse for Ozil.

The playmaker ought to have his pick of clubs, given that he will cost nothing, but so far every side his representatives have reached out to have baulked at his demands.

Incredibly, Ozil is asking for £330,000-a-week, a sum that has put off most suitors and failed to attract any solid offers for his services.

Embarrassingly, that could prompt him to complete an embarrassing U-turn and accept the £250,000-a-week offer on the table from Arsenal.

There’s just one problem: Arsene Wenger is also having second thoughts about the player’s worth.

The Gunners have gone six games unbeaten while Ozil has been out with a knee injury, and his importance to the club – in Wenger’s eyes – has reduced significantly.

Wenger is believed to be ready to listen to offers of around £20m in January if Ozil continues to stall on a new deal.

The German World Cup winner has only made four Premier League starts this season and has yet to record a goal or an assist, though he has created more chances than any of his teammates.
