Romelu Lukaku has been unstoppable to far this season with a goal in every game he’s played except one.

So he and Manchester United fans will be feeling confident that he will find the back of the net yet again this weekend when the Red Devils take on Liverpool.

But should they be?

Some data suggests that Lukaku, who is the Premier League’s top scorer with seven goals, may struggle to score at Anfield.

His goalscoring record against the top six sides since he joined Everton permanently for the 2014/15 season is dreadful. Over that period he played against the top six 35 times but managed just five goals – a record of one goal per seven performances.

Against the top six since 2014/15

Arsenal – 1 goal in 6 games

Chelsea – 0 goals in 6 games

Liverpool – 1 goal in 6 games

Man City – 2 goals in 6 games

Man Utd – 0 goals in 6 games

Tottenham – 1 goal in 5 games

Still, his record will be a worry for Manchester United ahead of this weekend’s clash.

Against Liverpool…

Specifically against Liverpool, Lukaku managed three goals in eight games during his time at Everton (including his loan spell). He also scored against them home and away in the Premier League during his season-long loan at West Brom.

Record v Liverpool

With Everton: 3 goals in 8 games

With West Brom: 2 goals in 3 games

With Chelsea: 0 goals in 2 games

After the international break…

Manchester United fans could look to Lukaku’s record after the international break for a little optimism.

He scored against Stoke immediately after the last international break and last season proved he doesn’t suffer badly after playing for Belgium. He scored upon his return in half the games he played immediately after international duty.

Do the figures really matter?

Despite some concerning stats, Lukaku is currently in the form of his life. Despite struggling with an injury and coming on as a second half substitute for Belgium earlier this week it took him just 12 minutes to score . It means he’s now scored in 12 of his 13 appearances for club and country this season. Liverpool should be scared.
