Liverpool have the ‘weapons’ to hurt Manchester United on Saturday and put an end to Jose Mourinho’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

That is the opinion of former Reds striker Robbie Fowler, who believes it is just a matter of time before Liverpool ‘click’ and dominate an opponent.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured a frustrating season so far, winning less than half of their league fixtures and dropping points against Newcastle and Burnley in recent weeks.

Manchester United, meanwhile, sit at the top of the league alongside rivals Man City after taking full points from all but one of their games.

But Fowler remains upbeat about Liverpool’s chances when they welcome United to Anfield on Saturday, telling Goal: ‘Eventually – and hopefully it is on Saturday – it will click for Liverpool and they will be converting more.

‘It will definitely turn and a few goals will be struck against an opponent because there’s definitely the players capable of doing that and the qualities of pace, guile and intelligence.

‘Liverpool will have to take the initiative given the way Mourinho will set up and they certainly have the weapons to hurt United.’

Fowler also hit back at Liverpool’s critics and the pessimism simmering at the club after the team have shipped 12 goals from seven league games this term.

‘Everyone’s doom and gloom when talking about them at the minute – I really don’t think that should be the case,’ the former England striker said.

‘It’s still relatively early in the season, there are still so many points on offer and I’m not going to sit here and say Liverpool are going to be champions because I’ll sound ridiculous now, but they’re not a million miles away.

‘If they get this win on Saturday, then the doom and gloom suddenly fades and the confidence rises for the next game.’

Mourinho will be without Marouane Fellaini at Anfield – the Belgian suffered a ligament injury during the international break with Belgium. Sadio Mane will also be an absentee with his hamstring injury set to see him sidelined for around six weeks.
