Louis van Gaal retains suspicions over Jose Mourinho’s conduct in succeeding him as Manchester United manager.

The Dutchman was dismissed at the conclusion of the 2015/16 season, with the decision emerging immediately after he took the side to glory in the FA Cup.

It ended a forgettable two-year reign for Van Gaal after which Mourinho was swiftly appointed.

The two men had an impromptu meeting at Anfield yesterday during which Mourinho, who assisted Van Gaal at Barcelona, asked the Dutch coach for a drink.

Afterwards Van Gaal revealed his feelings on Mourinho replacing him, admitting that he thinks the Portuguese tactician was working behind the scenes to oust him.

‘Of course. How I have suspected it, the way his transfer as a manager to Manchester United went was not elegant at all. That resulted in my sacking.

‘In principle, he is not a bad guy. He can be sympathetic and he was this way when he was my assistant in the past.

‘But he lets himself go out of control too often.’

While the football played under Van Gaal failed to impress, he was well liked by those at the club and he said the feeling was mutual.

‘I have great memories and my relationship with all the staff and fans was great during my time at United.’
