Liverpool became the first English club to score four first-half goals in an away Champions League game as they thrashed Maribor on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had won just one of their last eight games in all competitions prior to their trip to Slovenia but took an early lead through Roberto Firmino.

Philippe Coutinho doubled the visitors’ lead on 13 minutes before Mohamed Salah scored a brace to give the Reds a 4-0 cushion at the break.

As well as essentially securing a valuable three points in their tight Champions League group, the impressive display ensured Liverpool became the only English club to score four goals in a Champions League game away from home.

Firmino scored his second of the evening after the break and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold both scored late as Klopp’s charge cruised to an emphatic and important 7-0 win.

Speaking after the result, which was also the biggest away win for any English team in Europe, Salah told BT Sport: ‘It was a great game, we did good. It’s an important result for us, now we need to keep looking forward.

‘I’m very happy [to score] but the goals doesn’t change anything, the most important thing for us is to improve our results in the Premier League.’
